Plaid seat inserts: leather bolsters, cloth centres
The classic sports-seat recipe — cloth where you sit, leather or vinyl where you slide in. It lasts, it uses less fabric, and it is how most period plaid interiors were built.
Why inserts rather than full cloth
- Wear. Side bolsters take the friction of getting in and out. Leather or vinyl survives it; cloth pills and splits.
- Fabric. Inserts take roughly a third to a half of the cloth a full retrim needs.
- Look. A framed panel of plaid reads as deliberate; a whole seat in large tartan can be a lot.

Matching the check
- Choose the centre line first. Decide which band of the tartan runs down the middle of the seat, and mark it on every pattern piece.
- Mirror left and right. Driver's and passenger's seats should be reflections of each other.
- Line up cushion and backrest. The vertical bands should continue from one to the other when the seat is upright.
- Flat panels for large checks. Pleats and flutes chop a big tartan into stripes. If you want pleated inserts, use a fine houndstooth like F05.
Body and stitching
Trimmers usually back insert cloth with a thin layer of scrim foam, so the panel sits plump and the seams do not dig in. Pick the thread from the pattern: a stitch that repeats one colour of the check ties the bolsters to the insert.
